Wheat & Corn Report
June 9
Went to see the wheat harvest but didn’t. The only time I was near the combine it was raining & waiting for a truck to arrive.
Scott & hired man checking to see if the field was dry enough. Hadn’t rained for 6 days but one could push one’s finger, into the ground, past the first knuckle. It was deemed dry enough.
Checking how much damage the feral hogs were doing to the corn. Wasn’t extensive yet, but they were out and eating corn.
Remains of a hog's supper.
Checking the hog trap, it was empty. Haven't caught anything at this location. Need to take a dozer to the trees and brush so the hogs will go somewhere else but the farm is rented.
Other then the hogs the corn is doing great, last year it averaged 44 bu/ac, but they never have to spend money on dryer gas. This year there's been 3 times as much rain during May and June as compared to last year.
The wheat goes to Fort Worth which is 50+ miles. Decided to dump it a bin and take it town after harvest.
The pit is big enough to hold this load but not big enough for a semi. The vac blows it from the tube to the bin. Not the best patent, took an hour empty the pit. First time they've tried it with wheat so don't know if the vac was broke or if it doesn't like wheat. Scott would like to put in a leg when he can find the money.
