Vacation 2010 - Day 9
Sunday July 4
It felt strange to be spend the 4th of July in England. Didn't find a fireworks show.
The Dover ferry terminal from the Admiralty Lookout at Dover Castle. Location
The Secret Wartime Tunnels were boring. One tunnel looks like the next tunnel and the guide's purpose was to keep one from getting lost. Only interesting antidote he had was that they used to spice up tour with live actors but visitors would faint during the surgery room enactment so that was ended. The tunnels were going to "remodeled" next year to make them more interesting.
North gate to Dover Castle. Location
The beds were short because they slept sitting up. Superstitious reason: The only time one laid flat was when one was placed in a pine box. Practical reason: Keep one's head in the oxygen, as carbon monoxide would collect on the floor during the night.
Chapel window.
The Great Tower
Alter of the Church of St Mary.
Went 18 miles north to Canterbury.
Canterbury Cathedral is austere compared to Notre Dame.
Waiting for Evensong it is NOT an exciting video.
Attended the Choral Evensong but made a rookie mistake(s). Didn't sit away from the regulars and didn't read the fine print at the bottom of the order of service that photography and recording were not allowed. Gave it a try but the regular pointed to fine print so I was not able to record. Youtube to the rescue.
The choir consists of 10 men and 18 boys.
The organ solo wasn't as good as this video but it sounded as good. (O For A Thousand Tongues) There were about 100 people at Evensong and half seemed to be regulars. Choir sang a couple songs, couple scriptures read, couple responsive readings and it ended with an organ solo.
Walked St. Peters St., even got the locals to "pose" for me. Location
Can't believe I don't remember seeing this taco stand.
A bus will fit thru the gate to the city. Location
Location
